Ashfall Fossil Beds research. University of California palaeontology student searching for microfossils from deposits excavated at the Ashfall Fossil Beds. Part of Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park near Royal, Nebraska, USA, this site is where ash from an erupting volcano covered the area nearly 12 million years ago during the Miocene. Excavations have uncovered fossils and microfossils of animals and plants buried by the ash. Photographed in 2014.
