Cartilage tissue, illustration. Cartilage consists of cells called chondrocytes (red). These synthesize an extracellular matrix (yellow) of proteoglycans, collagen and water. Cartilage is strong but compressible due to its high water content. It is found in locations such as joints, spinal discs, the ear and nose, and in the rings holding the airway (trachea) open. In joints, cartilage provides flexible support, shock absorption, and reduction in friction as bones move against and over each other.
