Bone tissue, illustration. Bone is a tissue consisting of calcium minerals and collagen. It makes up most of the skeleton, providing protection for the internal organs and points of attachment for the muscles. The characteristic cells are osteocytes (red). Compact bone consists of concentric layers of collagen-containing matrix (lamellae), around Haversian canals, which contain blood and lymph vessels and nerves (not shown). These canals run the length of the bone. The lamellae and canals together form a Haversian system, or osteon.
