Simple columnar epithelial tissue, illustration. Epithelial tissues line cavities and surfaces within and on the body. The simple columnar type makes up the lining of the stomach, intestines and parts of the respiratory tract. It is a thicker layer than the other epithelial tissues, providing protection as well as secretion and absorption. Cell nuclei are red. For a set of images showing epithelial tissue types, see C023/8593 to C023/8597.
