Gangrenous toes in diabetes. Gangrene of the toes of a 70-year-old female diabetic patient with peripheral vascular disease. Peripheral vascular disease, which affects blood flow and can cause tissue death (necrosis), is a complication of diabetes mellitus type 1. Gangrene is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that arises when a considerable mass of body tissue dies.
