Ulcerative proctitis. Endoscopic view of areas of ulceration (white) caused by proctitis. Proctitis is an inflammation of the anus and the lining of the rectum. Symptoms include painful bowel movements, diarrhoea and rectal bleeding. It may be caused by sexually transmitted infections, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
