Mars water loss. Animation showing hydrogen atoms (H) escaping from the upper atmosphere of Mars. Water containing heavy hydrogen (deuterium, D) remained trapped on the planet. Oxygen atoms (O) are also shown. The escape of hydrogen helped to turn Mars from a wet planet 4.5 billion years ago into a dry, desert world.
