Milislav Demerec (1888-1962), Croatian-US geneticist. Demerec studied in Croatia (then Austria-Hungary) and France, before starting graduate studies in the USA in 1919. He obtained his PhD from Cornell University in 1923. His studies included the genetics of maize and Drosophila fruit flies. From 1941 to 1960 he was the director of the Carnegie Institution Department of Genetics (later Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), New York, USA. He also worked on the genetics of bacteria and their viruses. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1946. In 1947 he founded the journal 'Advances in Genetics'. Photographed in the 1940s.
