Andre Dreyfus (1897-1952), Brazilian geneticist. Dreyfus, from a French family that had emigrated to Brazil following the Franco-Prussian War, studied medicine in Rio de Janeiro. He was one of the founding members of the University of Sao Paulo (established in 1934). From 1943 to 1947 he was director of the School of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters and played a key role in bringing new teachers and funding and other resources to the university. His own research was in the area of cytology and genetics. His publications included 'Vida e Universo e Outros Ensaios' (Life and the Universe and other essays, 1934). Photographed on 11 February 1944.
