Winthrop John Vanleuven Osterhout (1871-1964), US botanist and plant physiologist. Osterhout studied at Brown University and obtained his doctorate in 1899 from the University of California, Berkeley. From 1909 he worked at Harvard University and the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. He was a trustee at the MBL for 30 years from 1919, the year he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. With Jacques Loeb, he founded the 'Journal of General Physiology' in 1918, editing it for some 45 years. He moved from Harvard to the Rockefeller Institute in 1925. Photographed at the MBL in 1921.
