Pigmented ice microbes. Light microscopy footage of extremophile microbes producing a red pigment that protects them in their Arctic environment. Microbial mats are found on ice shelves in the high Arctic. Extreme conditions in this ecosystem include low temperatures, high exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight, and high salinity. These extremophiles include bacteria, cyanobacteria and algae. The red pigment helps protect them from UV radiation. This sample is from Greenland.
