Girl taking an oral vaccine. The first mass production and clinical trials of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) made from live attenuated virus were conducted in the Soviet Union in the late 1950s. The success of the Russian clinical trials paved the way for the vaccine's key role in the global poliomyelitis eradication campaign. Photographed in 1974 at the Institute of Poliomyelitis and Encephalitic Infections in Moscow, Russia.
