Marcel Grossman (1878-1936), Swiss mathematician. Grossman was a friend and classmate of Albert Einstein, and it was he who emphasised the importance of a non-Euclidean geometry (Riemannian, elliptic, geometry) to Einstein, which was a necessary step in the development of Einstein's general theory of relativity.
