Swiss-German physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955, right) with German physicist Max Planck (1858-1947, left). Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for work on the photoelectric effect. However, he is best known for his paper on the special theory of relativity, which resulted in the famous equation E=mc2. Planck pioneered quantum mechanics, revolutionising classical physics. His 1900 paper describing black body radiation proposed that radiation must be emitted or received in energy packets (quanta), rather than continuously. Quantum theory was fully accepted after its successful prediction of the photoelectric effect (Einstein, 1905) and of the electronic structure of atoms (Bohr, 1913).
