Cocoons made from silk fibres. A silk cocoon is spun by the caterpillar of the silk moth, Bombyx mori. Each cocoon contains more than a kilometre of fibre. Cultivation involves killing the larva inside the cocoon by heat, before the cocoon is plunged into hot water and the fibre unwound.
