Caption

Dupuytren's contracture surgery. Close-up of the hand of an 85-year-old man with Dupuytren's contracture. This condition causes one or more fingers to become fixed in a bent position. Dupuytren's contracture occurs when tissue in the palm of the hand thickens and shortens, preventing the tendons attached to the fingers from moving freely. In this case, the contracted fingers were so tight the nails were digging into the palm of the hands and the nails could not be cut properly. Surgery is being carried out to free the tendons.
