Brachial plexus nerve block. Surgeon preparing to apply a nerve block on a 64-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who is undergoing a trapeziumectomy, an operation to remove a bone in her wrist. Local anaesthetic will be injected to numb the network of nerves in the upper chest known as the brachial plexus. This numbing of the nerves is known as a nerve block. This technique numbs the arm and is used as an alternative to general anaesthesia for surgery of the shoulder, arm, forearm, wrist and hand.
