Caption

Bacteria and bacteriophages. Illustration of bacteria (green-yellow) with bacteriophages (purple) attached to their outer surfaces. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. They inject their genetic material into a bacterium. These genetic instructions are used by the bacterium to build new bacteriophages. The new bacteriophages accumulate and burst out of the bacterium, killing it.
