Caption

Bacteriophage on bacterium. Illustration of a bacteriophage (red) attached to the outer surface of a bacterium (green and yellow). Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. They inject their genetic material into a bacterium. These genetic instructions are used by the bacterium to build new bacteriophages. The new bacteriophages accumulate and burst out of the bacterium, killing it.
