Amoeba and desmids. Polarised light micrograph of a Difflugia sp. testate (shelled) amoeba (upper right) and two Closterium sp. desmid green algae. Amoeba are freshwater single-celled organism that feed on bacteria and smaller protozoa. Testate amoeba have circular shells formed from the polysaccharide chitin. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
