Fern (Pilularia sp.) sporocarp. Light micrograph of a section through a sporocarp from a pillwort fern, showing a cluster (sorus) of megasporangia inside. Sporocarps are specialised spore-producing structures within the sporophytes of ferns. Sporangia are the structures within which spores are produced. Megasporangia produce megaspores, which develop into female gametophytes. Magnification: x21 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
