Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) female cone. Light micrograph of a section through a female cone from a Scot's pine tree, showing the woody ovuliferous scales (red) and bract scales (green). Two ovules (green) are produced side by side on the upper surface of the ovuliferous scale. Each arises as a group of cells that forms a rounded hump of tissue called the nucellus (purple-blue). Magnification: x2 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
