Electrolysis of sodium chloride solution. Apparatus used to pass a current through sodium chloride (table salt) dissolved in water. Passing an electric current through a sodium chloride solution separates the sodium from the chlorine. Bubbles of chlorine gas are produced at the anode (positive electrode), hydrogen gas is produced at the cathode (negative electrode) and a solution of sodium hydroxide is formed in the beaker.
