Caption

An illustrated posterior view of the thyroid and parathyroid glands and nearby structures in the neck including the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage, arytenoid cartilage and trachea. The thyroid works in conjunction with the parathyroids (in red) which are embedded on the posterior aspect of the gland. The four small parathyroid glands produce calcitonin which lowers blood calcium levels by inhibiting the rate of decalcification.
