Metastasis is the spread of cancer from one organ to another. After a single cell in tissue gets progressively damaged, and produces a cancer stem cell with a malignant phenotype, it undergoes an uncontrolled abnormal mitosis creating a tumor, which can then penetrate normal tissue and create another daughter tumor. Some of these cells can also acquire the ability to penetrate blood vessels and can then circulate in the bloodstream to create other tumours. These are known as metastatic or secondary tumours.
