An illustration of a man suffering from a heart attack. The narrowing of the coronary artery from conditions such as atherosclerosis, reduces blood flow to myocardial tissue and can cause damage or death to heart muscle cells when completely restricted. An inset illustration is included which depicts the rupture of plaque from the wall of a coronary artery. The formation of a thrombus occludes the artery, leading to the necrosis of heart muscle tissue located downstream.
