Predicted annular solar eclipse of 1820. Diagram prepared four years earlier to show five expected appearances of the solar eclipse of 7 September 1820. The eclipse was partial when seen from Middelburg and St Petersburg. It was annular when seen from Gottingen, Groningen and Amsterdam. The latter is shown as a partial eclipse here, but this was incorrect (see C024/9979). An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, leaving a ring of sunlight visible. Labels indicate the start (right) and end (left) of the observations. These calculations and diagrams were prepared in Antwerp in 1816 by Dutch astronomer J. P. Bourje.
