Ordnance Survey observatory, Southampton, 1885. The Ordnance Survey, the national British mapping agency, was founded in 1791. Its headquarters moved to Southampton in 1841. Observatories were used by the Ordnance Survey as triangulation points to aid in their surveying and mapping work.
