Heavy gas dispersion trials. Researchers watching as tests are carried out on heavy gas dispersion models. Such experiments help to model how such gases disperse, aiding design of safety precautions to deal with accidental releases. Such heavy gas clouds can be fatal if they engulf humans or if they are flammable and ignite. Examples are carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and many industrial chemicals. This test is taking place at a research facility operated by what is today the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Photographed in the 1980s on Thorney Island, West Sussex, UK.
