Alkali Flies (Ephydra hians) feeding on single-celled algae in Mono Lake, California. These flies and their larvae are an important food source for migratory and nesting birds. Nearly two million waterbirds use Mono Lake to rest and eat for at least part of the year and these flies are a primary food source.
