Human intestines, illustration. The first inset shows the location of the intestines in the abdomen. The second shows the small intestine and large intestine, and the third is a microscopic view of the lining of the small intestine. Its surface is made up of villi, which are minute finger-like projections, each of which contains a lymph vessel and a network of blood capillaries (red and blue). The villi greatly increase the surface area across which digested food can be absorbed.
