Adobe house in native grassland, Cuyama Valley, San Luis Obispo County, California. Though this location is only 35 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the coastal mountain ranges block most precipitation, creating a hot and dry climate suitable for grassland habitat. Modern farming practices with irrigation fed by wells have turned much of the valley into productive cropland. This view hearkens back to an earlier time.
