Caption

Colour enhanced transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of bacterial plasmids. Part of the plasmid is a gene which codes for an enzyme that inactivates the antibiotic tetracycline. The plasmid can be transmitted between different bacterial species by conjugation; thus pathogenic bacteria may acquire resistance to tetracycline by plasmid transfer. Magnification: 100,000x.
