Vitamin C. Polarised light micrograph of crystals of vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is water soluble, and is essential in maintaining healthy connective tissues, the integrity of cell walls and the manufacture of collagen. Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy. The suggested daily adult intake is 30 milligrammes. Useful nutritional sources are citrus fruits and juices and fresh vegetables. Magnification x12.5 at 35mm size.
