Vitamin deficiency symptoms. Illustration of symptoms that can be caused by vitamin deficiencies. A poor diet, alcoholism, or certain drug interactions can cause an individual to become deficient in one or more vitamins. Deficiency in Vitamin D leads to Rickets in children, causing bowing of the leg bones, (centre) and osteomalacia in adults, causing demineralisation and softening of the bones (bottom right). Deficiency in niacin (vitamin B3) causes pellagra, which has symptoms including weight loss and skin lesions.
