Microbial microscopy analysis. Close-up of a scientist using a microscope to study a microbial culture in a petri dish. Culturing and studying such samples allows bacterial and fungal diseases to be diagnosed and treated. Here, a microscope and ultraviolet (UV) light is being used to examine a petri dish with buffered charcoal yeast extract agar (BCYE, black) that has been used to culture Legionella bacteria (white growths). This work is being carried out in the UK at the Health Protection Agency's Centre for Infections.
