Microbiology research. Close-up of a microbiologist inoculating a petri dish with a microbial sample. The petri dish contains a nutrient medium that will be used to culture the microbes. These ones contain MacConkey agar, used to differentiate lactose-fermenting bacteria from non-lactose-fermenting bacteria. Culturing and studying such samples allows bacterial and fungal diseases to be diagnosed and treated. Photographed at the Centre for Infections, Health Protection Agency, UK.
