Oral specimen collection device. Close-up of the handle of an oral specimen collection device being broken off after use. The collecting pad was held between the lower cheek and gum for two to five minutes to absorb a sample oral fluid. This fluid has a different composition to saliva. The pad has been placed in this collection vial, which contains preservatives that stabilize the sample for up to 21 days. The sample is then transported to a laboratory for testing. Typical tests include screening for tobacco use and cocaine abuse. For a sequence showing the use of this device to take a sample, see images C025/4850 to C025/4853.
