Watermelon snow. Red snow on the slopes of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Dolomites, Italy. The colour of this snow, known as watermelon snow, is caused by the Chlamydomonas nivalis green algae. This cryophilic algae thrives in freezing water and contains the red carotenoid pigment astaxanthin in addition to chlorophyll.
