Caption

Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) sleeves on a patient's legs. These inflatable sleeves are connected to an air pump at the end of the bed. The pump inflates and deflates the sleeves, and the waves of pressure squeeze fluids through the tissues of the lower limb, ensuring movement of venous blood. This can help prevent deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and cardiac depression, which are risks of surgery.
