Earth's radiation belts. Computer illustration of the Earth and its radiation belts (blue, red) that protect it from cosmic radiation and the solar wind. The Earth has two such belts, known as the Van Allen radiation belts, and sometimes others may be created. These belts consists of a layer of ionised (charged) particles that surround the Earth, trapped by its magnetic field.
