Lava from the Laki eruption of 1783-84 near Kirkjubaejarklaustur is covered by cushion-shaped moss. A small willow is growing in a wind-protected depression in the foreground. The eruption of the Laki fissure lead to famine and a massive death toll in Iceland and had severe effects on the weather of the Northern Hemisphere.
