Hand-Coloured Engraving of Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius. Attributed to Colette Hondius, Early 17th Century. Mercator's world map of 1569 used a new projection where sailing courses of constant bearing were represented as straight lines. Mercator was also a leading globe maker. Hondius is best known for his work on maps of Europe and the New World.
