Flight plan for Mars 2 and 3 probes. Diagram showing the stages of the spaceflight by the Soviet unmanned probes Mars 2 and Mars 3 between Earth (lower left) and Mars (upper right). These identical spacecraft launched in May 1971, reaching Mars in November and December of that year. They each launched a lander (stage 4 in this diagram) before entering orbit around Mars (stage 5). The earlier stages (1-3 in this diagram) involved the spacecraft flight trajectory being corrected and boosted after leaving Earth orbit. Mars 2 released its lander on 27 November 1971, the first man-made object to reach the surface of Mars. The Russian labels are in Cyrillic.
