US ship after 1946 atomic bomb test. Aerial view of the ex-aircraft carrier the USS Independence at anchor in San Francisco Bay, California, USA, in January 1951. The damage seen here occurred when it took part in the 1946 Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. It was damaged in both of the tests, the aerial Able blast on 1 July 1946, and the underwater Baker blast on 25 July 1946. The ship was later scuttled near the Farallon Islands off the coast of California on 29 January 1951. For a sonar scan of the wreck in 2015, see image C026/3038.
