Light micrograph of the surface of a purified Germanium (Ge) sample. German chemist Clemens Winkler (1838–1904). Germanium (atomic number 32), is a lustrous, hard, greyish-white metalloid in the carbon group. Chemically similar to its group neighbours tin and silicon. Germanium is an important semiconductor material used in transistors and various other electronic devices. Germanium is one material being considered to replace silicon because it could enable the industry to make smaller transistors and more compact integrated circuits. Compared to silicon, germanium also is said to have a "higher mobility" for electrons and electron "holes, " a trait that makes for ultra-fast circuits. Horizontal object size of this section: 4.0 mm.
