Esophagus in cross-section viewed by light microscopy. Typical wide wall consisting of much smooth muscle (red) in longitudinal and circular orientations. This muscle propels solids and liquids to the stomach. Stretching and contraction is facilitated by the loose connective tissue deep to the thick internal epithelial lining of protective stratified squamous epithelium.
