Light microscopy of a growing fetal tooth. This horizontal section is below the gumline. The root and the developing enamel (dark red) of the tooth is bordered by connective tissue of periodontal ligament suspending the tooth in a socket of jaw bone stained pink. Spaces in the ligament are blood vessels and nerves are also present. The centre of the tooth is the pulp cavity (blue) that also has vessels and nerves. Outer arch-like cap of cells are ameloblasts producing the enamel layer. Adjacent to it is dentin (pink arch) a hard tissue produced by odontoblasts next to the pulp. Magnification x80 when printed at 10 cm wide.
