Human gall bladder exhibiting inflammation, known as cholecystitis. Often caused by obstruction of the neck or the cystic duct by gallstones, the surface mucosa shows inflammatory cell infiltration, excessive mucous pockets and retention of mucus and accumulation of bile. Chronic cholecystitis may progress to tissue infarction and gangrenous necrosis, with risks of rupture and peritonitis. Magnification x 20 when printed at 10 cm wide.
