Spongy or cancellous bone is shown (pink) with cavities for bone marrow, and patches of calcifying cartilage (blue). At the top, muscle fibres insert at angle into the periosteum, a special connective tissue layer adherent to the bone surface. Some of the cells in the periosteum can produce new bone tissue if for example the bone is damaged such as in fracture. Magnification x50 when printed 10cm wide.
